Comstock Fire Station 9-1 will hold a blood drive in memory of Fire Chief Ed Switalski on Wednesday, June 10. After 37 years of fire service, Switalski was killed June 14, 2017, when he was struck by a vehicle while working a crash scene on I-94. The annual blood drive is scheduled from 1 to 6:45 p.m. at 1960 River St. in Kalamazoo. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients, according to the American Red Cross about an urgent need nationwide. Officials say COVID-19 has made an unprecedented impact on the collection of blood and platelet donations. The Switalski blood drive has generally had a good turnout of donors in recent years. According to police, Brandon Clevenger, 24 of Springfield was driving at around 90 miles per hour and using his cell phone when he lost control of his vehicle and struck Switalski, who was standing on the shoulder of the road.
