Investigators will return Tuesday to the rubble of a four-bedroom Battle Creek home searching for the cause of a Memorial Day fire.
The fire at 3945 Nichols Road destroyed the home of Melissa Smith and her boyfriend, David Coffman, and two sons.
Battle Creek firefighters were called at 2:11 p.m. on Monday and found the house engulfed in flames, said Battalion Chief Mike Fleisher.
"We had a fully engulfed fire, the whole thing was going," he said. "The whole thing was going all the way to a car (in the driveway)."
The house and two vehicles were destroyed.
The 2,100 square foot, two-story home is surrounded by trees at the west end of Nichols Road and Fleisher said calls came from nearby Interstate 94 for what callers initially believed to be a grass fire.
