A two-story home was leveled by flames in Muskegon early Sunday morning.
Firefighters responded to the blaze on Jiroch Street near the intersection of East Grand Avenue, just prior to 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, Muskegon Deputy Fire Chief Jay Paulson told MLive.
“Units on arrival found the home fully engulfed and could see heavy fire conditions through about every window in the house,” Paulson said. No one was inside the home at the time of the fire, Paulson said, but crews spent a great deal of time searching for the home’s two occupants as the fire continued to burn.
They learned relatively quickly that one of the occupants was in the hospital for an unrelated issue, he said.
“The other one we were not able to account for for some time, so we did several searches inside the home,” Paulson said. "While we were searching, the second floor ended up collapsing onto the first floor and we had to back out and go defensive for a while.
