Multiple crews responded to a structure fire late Tuesday morning near the Erickson Power Plant in Delta Township. The fire was put out around 1:30 p.m. by firefighters from multiple agencies and there were no injuries, according to a Board of Water & Light spokesman. Officials said the fire started on the roof of a newly constructed building that’s part of the Delta Energy Park project. It’s located near the power plant on Canal Road, just south of Millett Highway. Sparks caused by construction work on top of the building started the fire. Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof so it could be contained and put out. Officials said the Erickson Power Plant wasn’t damaged. BWL, a Lansing-owned utility, broke ground on the $500 million Delta Energy park in 2019. The new plant will produce natural gas-fueled power and eventually replace the Erickson and Eckert power stations. They both burn coal. The entire energy park project is expected to be completed by fall.
