The Peninsula Township Fire Department is celebrating its newest home! This is the township's third fire station off Center Road. It includes housing for staff and an upgraded medical first response fire truck. Fire Chief Fred Gilstorff said crews at the department's northernmost station in Mapleton currently take 14 to 18 minutes to respond to a call on the far end of Old Mission. "If somebody stops breathing or their heart stops.. you have 4 to 6 minutes to change that," said Gilstorff. "From the fireside, fire doubles in size every minute, so decreasing that time to get there and start a tactic to change that enhances our ability for a positive outcome. We will utilize our part-time staff to utilize this third station." Gilstorff said residents in the area could receive better insurance premiums because of the new station. The goal is to have it operational by March 15.
