An intoxicated man caught his Blackman Township home on fire early Wednesday morning, officials said. Firefighters responded to the fire at a condominium in the 1400 block of Longfellow Avenue at 12:17 a.m., Jan. 13 and found smoke and flames coming out of the building, Blackman-Leoni Director of Public Safety Mike Jester said. The homeowner was the only resident of the condo and started the fire through careless smoking, Jester said. The man was intoxicated and Jackson County sheriff’s deputies had to keep him from causing issues while firefighters put the fire out, Jester said. He was taken to Henry Ford Allegiance Health to treat his intoxication level, Jester said. The fire caused extensive damage to the man’s condo, Jester said, adding there was also smoke damage to the attached condominiums. The Jackson Fire Department and Summit Township Fire Department assisted at the scene. The scene was cleared around 3 a.m.
