Our country is facing a shortage of firefighters and paramedics. And the issue is impacting northern Michigan. But work is being done to bring on more recruits. "It is my great honor to present to you the northwest regional fire training class of 2020-2021." After six months of classes and training, 13 northern Michigan students climbed the ranks to become firefighters. "It's a big deal for these 13 to be going out into our communities." Much needed recruits as fire departments are dealing with staffing shortages. They need paramedics and firefighters. An issue the Traverse City Fire Department is concerned about. "We're staffed about the same as we were in the 70's and you know the town has grown tremendously," said Captain Steven Ball with the Traverse City Fire Department. "I would say that's pretty consistent with all the departments in the area."
