Pittsfield Township officials are inviting residents to a series of public town halls to discuss a proposed tax increase for police and fire services, their second attempt to raise revenue for public safety in less than a year.
In May, voters nixed an increase that would have raised about $8.4 million when first levied in 2022 by a margin of 450 votes.
This time, the increase on the Nov. 2 ballot is more modest. If passed, it would increase the tax rate from 1.95 to 2.95 mills, or $2.95 on each $1,000 of taxable value, for five years. The measure would raise approximately $6.5 million when first levied, officials estimate.
