Police have identified two people who died in an Upper Peninsula house fire. Investigators with the Michigan State Police believe the remains found at the residence in Houghton County’s Portage Township on Jan. 7 are husband and wife 32-year-old John Makela and 27-year-old Breanna Makela. Police originally said one person died in the fire reported at approximately 9:16 p.m. They later corrected the information on Jan. 9 saying a second person had died. An autopsy has been performed and the results are still pending, police said. Family members have been contacted by investigators. The coroner is attempting to use dental records and DNA to officially identify the remains.
