A lint buildup in the laundry area of the Holiday Motel on South Westnedge Avenue in Portage caught fire Friday evening and quickly spread. The Portage Fire Division was called to the motel around 5:15 p.m. for the fire after the manager discovered the flames and tried to use a fire extinguisher. The fire spread to the interior of the building, but the manager’s work prevented it from continuing to spread. Battalion Chief Lou Playford says dryer lint is highly flammable and even a small buildup of it can lead to a fire. He is encouraging people to check their dryer’s lint filter on a regular basis and ensure the ventilation system remains clear to avoid a fire. The fire damaged the exterior of the Holiday Motel and had started to spread to the attic and roof before firefighters got it out.
