The Medicine Lake Fire Department reports firefighter Tom Chapman died last Friday following a battle with lung cancer.
In a Facebook post, the department said Chapman was 62-years-old and leaves behind a wife and son.
He joined the department in 2006, and the post said he was instrumental in many water rescues over his years there.
"We are mourning not just as a tight-knit organization, but as a very tight-knit community," read a portion of the post. "Tom always brought a smile and great conversation everywhere he went. To say we’re heartbroken would be an understatement."
