Kaden Kummala turns 5 at the end of August, but he’s not asking for presents. “I just want people to give me money so I can give it to the firefighters,” he told his dad. With help from his parents, Kyle and Katie Kummala, the Ramsey 4-year-old is raising funds for the Anoka-Champlin Fire Department. His parents say it was Kaden’s idea to give up presents to help others. “Originally he said he wanted to give a birthday to someone who couldn’t have any birthday presents,” Katie said. The logistics of that idea proved difficult, so his parents suggested raising money for something else. While Kaden was at the Anoka County Fair in July, Kyle mentioned that a friend who is an Anoka-Champlin firefighter was stationed at the grandstand in case someone was hurt or a fire started. That gave Kaden an idea. “Right then and there, he goes, ‘That’s what I want to do for my birthday: I want to raise money for the firefighters,’” Kyle said.
