Glen Solem is known as a hero in the Grand Lake community where he has served as a volunteer firefighter for 11 years. His son Brandon has served with him for the last 3. Brandon said, "You can't even put a number to how many calls he's been on, how many houses he's saved, how many people he's saved from car accidents, medicals, you name it, he's kind of done it." Lately, Glen has had to put his service on pause. He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in November of 2018. “From there it was just a whole different lifestyle," Brandon said, "It was going to appointments, wondering what’s going to happen, uncertainty constantly.” Since then, Glen has made it through the first round of chemotherapy and several unexpected medical problems, never losing that fighting spirit.
