No one was injured by a fire at Bill and Tami VanderPlaats’ home at 810 2nd St. SE in Pipestone Sunday night, but the couple has been displaced due to damage. Tami said she’d just put a load of laundry in the dryer and gone upstairs when Bill yelled to call 911 because there was a fire. Bill, who is a member of the Pipestone Volunteer Fire Department, extinguished the fire before firefighters arrived, but not before the home was damaged by smoke. “The smoke was pretty thick,” said Pipestone Fire Chief Corey Popma. Popma said firefighters worked to clear smoke from the home and brought the dryer and other items outside. They then opened up the wall in the laundry room to check on a few hot spots.
