As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, officials are reminding campers and day use visitors to National Forests in northern Minnesota to be extra vigilant when it comes to campfires.
The fire danger is increasing with dry weather, warmer temperatures and high winds. In those conditions, the potential is high for escaped fires to spread rapidly.
Use fire rings or fire grates at campsites, supervise the fire at all times and have a shovel and water available to extinguish the fire using the "drown and stir" method.
Limit fires to the night-time hours during hot, dry and windy days.
Statewide fire danger conditions and burning restrictions can be found on the Minnesota DNR website.
