A woman found dead after a fire at a homeless encampment in St. Paul was a 32-year-old, police said Thursday. The cause of Janiece S. Williams’ death, along with the fire, remain under investigation. Firefighters responded to the downtown encampment on the north side of Shepard Road between Jackson and Sibley streets about 6:35 a.m. Wednesday. A fire damaged three tents and firefighters extinguished the blaze. Firefighters found Williams in one of the tents that had been damaged, said Deputy Fire Chief Roy Mokosso. A 36-year-old woman who had burn injuries was transported to the hospital for treatment. She escaped from a tent where the fire started; that tent was destroyed, Mokosso said.
