The Kansas City Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fatal house fire that happened early Wednesday morning. Fire crews were called to a home in the 5300 block of Northeast Munger Avenue around 7 a.m. A neighbor saw smoke and called 911. When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the single-story home. KCFD Deputy Chief Jimmy Walker initially said two people were found dead at the scene of the fire. Firefighters later determined only one person had died. Authorities said a woman was found dead inside a bedroom of the home. She was the only person home at the time of the fire. No word yet on what started the fire, however they believe the blaze started near the basement stairs. Authorities are unsure if there were working smoke detectors inside the home.
