A longtime member of the Cole County Fire Protection District who died Friday will be honored this week. Senior Assistant Chief Galen Hammann, 63, of Jefferson City, died while driving his truck in the 3600 block of Rockridge Road. Hammann was traveling onto a private drive when he suffered an unknown medical condition, according to a Missouri Highway Patrol report. The truck went off the road and struck a fence. Hammann was pronounced dead at the scene. Hammann served with the Cole County Fire Protection District for more than 40 years and, along with six other family members, worked out of Fire Station 1 on County Park Road — about 1 mile away from where the family grew up, according to a 2013 News Tribune feature story.
