Gastonia Police successfully coaxed a suicidal man down from about 100 feet up a electrical tower Thursday in west Gastonia. Area police and firefighters responded to a field near the corner of N.C. 274 and the business park on Delta Drive around 12:24 p.m. Thursday. The man, clad in blue jeans and shoes, but no shirt, had climbed up one of several electrical towers in the area. For about 45 minutes, he moved about the tower. Employees at the surrounding businesses gathered outside to watch as the situation unfolded. Shortly after 1:30 p.m., the man descended the tower. When he reached the ground, he began to walk off in the field away from Delta Drive. Police took him into custody outside a home near the electrical tower and led him away in handcuffs and into a police cruiser.
