Investigators are waiting on the positive identity of a person who was found dead inside a home that caught on fire on Monday.
The cause of the deadly fire is being investigated.
According to police Capt. Terry Parker, Lumberton police and firefighters were called to a home at 1303 East St. that was on fire and found a body inside. The dead person is believed to be a resident of the home, but investigators are awaiting a positive identification through an autopsy.
Parker said the home had “extensive damage due to the fire.”
The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting, which is standard procedure when a fire death occurs.
The house was “fully involved in flames” at 6:58 p.m. Monday when firefighters with the City of Lumberton Fire Department arrived, according to Fire Chief Paul Ivey of the Lumberton Fire Department.
