An Apex doorbell camera captured what appears to be arson. Police used the surveillance video from the camera to ask for a search warrant, looking for gas cans, combustible materials, clothing and electronics at 5116 Herndon Lane after a fire around the corner, at 8124 Smith Road. According to the warrant application, the video showed a man pull up in front of the Herndon Lane property just before noon on Aug. 8. The man can be seen walking out of the picture with a gasoline can in hand. He returns to the picture about five minutes later, without the gasoline can, running toward Smith Road. By 12:15 p.m., Wake County Sheriff's deputies were responding to the report of a fire on Smith Road. Neighbors identified the man in the video as Charles Lamont King, resident of the Herndon Lane address, police said. They also said the car in the video belongs to King.
