Several Craven County volunteer fire departments and the Jaycees are supporting families in their communities during the Christmas season. The holiday help is called Operation Fill the Sleigh and firefighters are currently accepting donations for toys and gifts for several families. Fire officials said it's important for the volunteer fire departments to help the community whenever there is a need and especially during Christmas. Firefighter Joseph Hofmann said "It hits you right here in the heart. Christmas is for the kids and that's what it's all about. Some of these kids don't have anything, you know Christmas is just another day of the year for them. They can't get anything and they don't have any money. Craven County fire departments will use the donations to change the bleak Christmas Day outlook for many children.
