Another Asheville firefighter taken too soon from cancer. "This isn't supposed to happen to someone like Karen," said Scott Mullins, president of Asheville Firefighter Association. "She took great care of her body. She ate the right foods. Karen did everything the right way, and we still lost her." Karen Shuart, often known as "Skippy" by her friends and colleagues, fought long and hard for almost a year battling occupational cancer. It's a cancer caused from exposure to carcinogens. "I 100 percent feel like it was related to the job," Mullins said. Mullins said it's sad having to watch another one of his colleagues lose his or her life to cancer.
