Fire ripped through a former elementary school in North Carolina Tuesday morning. Crews were first called just before 2 a.m. to the Old French Broad Elementary School on Fletcher Martin Road in Alexander, according to a Buncombe County emergency dispatcher. Firefighters had to use water from a nearby creek and drive it back to the building to extinguish the flames. Three people were inside and able to get out, according to French Broad Fire Chief Matthew Shelton. He said the people were not allowed to be in the building. Shelton said there were plans for the building to be turned into apartments.
