In a bittersweet tribute Wednesday, Knightdale town officials honored the service of Fire Chief Tim Guffey, who will retire at the end of the month after 17 years with the fire department.
The town council held a presentation to show appreciation for Guffey, and awarded him his fire helmet as a gift to take into retirement.
“We’ve had a lot of successes over the last 17 years and I owe it to these folks back here,” Guffey said during the presentation, pointing to the rows of firefighters who were sitting in the audience. He then choked up as he pointed to members of his family.
The town council unanimously approved a resolution of appreciation for Guffey’s work with the town. Mayor James Roberson presented Guffey with a framed copy of the resolution and the audience gave Guffey a standing ovation.
