The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing about a proposed countywide fire service district today, but recent developments have raised questions about support for the proposal. On Feb. 21, House Bill 120 was filed to clarify eligible uses of fire-protection tax revenues. N.C. Reps. Debra Conrad (R-Forsyth), Julia Howard (R-Davie, Rowan), Donny Lambeth (R-Forsyth) and John Szoka (R-Cumberland) are the primary sponsors. Forsyth County Manager Dudley Watts mentioned the proposed bill in a letter he sent to volunteer fire chiefs and fire department board chairmen March 8. Watts stated that the Forsyth County commissioners are “aware that both the original house bill and the current version that has been referred to a committee would eliminate the county’s supplemental staffing program.”
