Driver killed after car strikes Kannapolis fire truck, injuring four firefighters

PHOTO: A car collided with a Kannapolis Fire Department engine on Tuesday afternoon, killing one person and leaving four firefighters in need of treatment at a local hospital. A man driving a Mazda Protege is reported to have crossed the center line on Centergrove Road when he struck the truck head on. The Mazda was totaled in the accident while the fire engine suffered damage as well. The driver of the car, Tyrell Carlton, later died at the hospital. No one else was in the car with him at the time of crash, officials say. The Kannapolis firefighter driving the truck told officials he saw the car crossing the line and applied his brakes and blew his horn, almost coming to a full stop. Four firefighters reportedly suffered minor injuries were transported to Atrium Northeast following the collision.
