“Truck 1 to Wilson,” said Mayor Bruce Rose. “Go ahead Truck 1,” the Wilson telecommunicator responded. “Truck 1 is decommissioned. Tower 1 is in service,” Rose called back. The brief exchange Friday morning signaled the last call for Wilson Fire/Rescue’s old ladder truck and the start of an era with the department’s newest rig that includes a 100-foot aerial platform. “Like everybody else, I hate paying taxes, but this truck cost $1.29 million, and I love every dollar of it,” said Ralph Zampella, a transplant and former New York City police officer. “I don’t care because when we called the fire department the other day, they were there within about five minutes.” Zampella attended a dedication ceremony Friday for the new truck with his wife, daughter and 4-year-old grandson, Armaan Allan.
