VIDEO: A 92-year-old had a close call Monday evening after his shed caught fire.
Swannanoa fire officials said they got the call about 6 p.m. and arrived on scene on Edwards Avenue about 4 minutes later. They said a shed at the back of the home caught fire and started to spread to the home.
The man was sitting out on his porch.
Thankfully, quick actions by first responders and neighbors prevented things from ending much worse.
"So I was coming out to fill up my daughter's pool with some water and I saw some flames," neighbor Chris Cannon said.
It wasn't what Cannon expected to see along this normally quiet road in Swannanoa.
"We've got like five fire departments out here," Cannon said.
But just minutes before the street was lined with fire trucks, Cannon and neighbor Max Henkell jumped into action.
"I saw the flames, and I took off running," Cannon said. "John was sitting on his porch and had no idea what was going on."
The two said they assisted a Buncombe County Sheriff's deputy get their 92-year-old-neighbor to a safe location.
