Fire and Emergency Services and Forestry aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune have begun a controlled burn to curtail the spreading of a wildfire that has already burned 1,200 acres.
The wildfire originated in the G-10 impact area and spread to the adjacent ranges south of Lyman Road from Lucky’s Mound (OP-2) to the intersection with N.C. 172 (G-27) around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
According to Director for Communications Strategy and Operations for Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River Nat Fahy, the fire began as a flareup from a previously prescribed burn.
“When the winds shifted to the south,” Fahy said, “that presented something of a problem.”
Base Forestry began another prescribed burn to control the flareup, according to Fahy. This ensured the fire would not reach Lyman Road.
“As the saying goes: you fight fire with fire,” Fahy said.
Fires in the G10 area are fairly common, according to Fahy, especially when the weather is dry and windy.
While there were no injuries from the fire, Fahy said, “This one got a little too close for comfort.”
