On Saturday, Nov. 9, the Burlington Fire Department will canvass select neighborhoods, checking homes for smoke detectors, and installing free ones for those who want them, thanks to a partnership with the American Red Cross. According to a press release from the department, firefighters have responded to more than 900 structure fires in the city in the past 10 years. In an effort to cut down on that number, firefighters and Red Cross volunteers will be distributing smoke detectors in select neighborhoods that historically have had more structure fires. These smoke detectors, donated by the Red Cross through the Sound the Alarm program, have 10-year lithium ion batteries that do not need to be changed like traditional smoke detectors.
