The Havelock Fire and Rescue Department in Craven County raised more than $9,000 to help cancer patients in the East. Department leaders presented the Carolina East Foundation with a check for $9,453.00 on Monday. Proceeds were raised through the department's "Brave Enough to Wear Pink" campaign. Throughout October, firefighters wore pink t-shirts and sold them to the public to raise money. The funds will help cancer patients with costs that aren't covered by health insurance. Long-time Havelock resident Victoria Auld isn't a firefighter but joined the department's effort. She sold nearly $1,800 worth of shirts. "It's your community helping your community. We're helping each other, and that's what I kind of wanted to do and maybe spark something so next year hopefully more people could come out and volunteer," said Auld. This is the 10th year the fire department has held the fundraiser.
