A third fire station is on the horizon for Hendersonville after City Council agreed to purchase a parcel of land near East Flat Rock. Council members Thursday night approved the $266,500 purchase of 2.1 acres of land on Shepherd Street and Old Spartanburg Road. The property is located near a four-way stop at the intersection. The land has access to both streets and is currently not part of the city limits. With the amount of calls growing rapidly in recent years, city officials have been looking to add a third fire station, particularly in a location to serve the southern portion of the city. The city was recently awarded a $1.25-million grant from the Department of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency to hire 12 firefighters. The firefighters will be split into three shifts – three firefighters and battalion chief – and a fire engine will be purchased for the group.
