A tractor-trailer hauling an aboveground fuel tank struck a bridge while traveling on Interstate 40 Wednesday afternoon. Around 1 p.m., Statesville Fire Chief Spencer Lee said, the truck was traveling west and was hauling a new, empty fuel tank when it struck the Meachem Road Bridge located between exits 150 and 148. He added wreckers were on the scene working to remove the tank. Lee said around 1:20 p.m the NCDOT evaluated the bridge and confirmed it is safe, and that I-40 was shut down due to the tank in the road.
