An elderly man was rescued from his apartment and transported to hospital on Thursday night. The Statesville Fire Department was dispatched to a possible structure fire on West Front Street at 9:42 p.m., according to Statesville Fire Chief Spencer Lee. Crews were called and arrived within three minutes to find smoke in a duplex apartment with a man inside the residence. The Engine 1 crew rescued the elderly man, who was living by himself, Lee said. “Fortunately the fire was contained to the pot he was cooking in, so there was very little damage to the building itself,” he states in a text. The adjacent apartment was occupied by the rescued man’s sister. She was not hurt in the incident. The patient was treated by EMS and transported to the hospital for further care, Lee stated.
