A Buckhorn community house being used as a duplex was damaged by fire Wednesday morning. The residences are located at 8053-A and 8053-B N.C. 42 West, just east of N.C. 581 and Papa Jack’s Store and Grill. According to Rock Ridge Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jimmy Miller, the call came in at 7:29 a.m. Miller said the single-story wood structure is a two-part apartment. The person who was in the residence in the back part of the house when the fire started was not injured and had gotten out of the house before firefighters arrived. “The structure had heavy smoke coming out of the windows and through the roof,” Miller said. “The front part is where the major fire was. We had to make entry into the building and had to do a lot of ceiling tearing-out in order to get the fire extinguished.” Miller said fire suppression was sooner because the new Rock Ridge VFD station is nearby.
