National Child Passenger Safety Week is taking place this week and the Hendersonville Fire Department would like to remind parents and caregivers to ensure children are secured in a properly installed child safety seat. “We know proper child safety seat installation is critical to protecting and saving the lives of children involved in car crashes,” said Hendersonville Fire Chief Joseph Vindigni. “Our Fire Department is committed to working with caregivers to provide education and offer safety seat installation assistance.” According to Safe Kids North Carolina, motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death among children ages 1 to 19. Of those children ages 12 and under who died in vehicle crashes in 2017, nearly 40% were not restrained. Children ages 2 to 5 who use safety belts prematurely are four times more likely to suffer a serious injury if in an accident.
