The effort to restore an over 100-year-old piece of Goldsboro history is gaining momentum.
Monday, Goldsboro Fire Chief Joe Dixon and Mayor Chuck Allen each donated $1,000 to the effort to restore the historic 1919 LaFrance fire engine. Mayor Allen says the idea is to lead by example and hopefully prompt more citizens to donate to the effort.
The 1919 American LaFrance is actually the second fire engine purchased by the Goldsboro Fire Department, and it’s the oldest existing piece of the city’s motorized firefighting equipment.
The plan has been to restore the 1919 LaFrance fire engine with no city tax dollars for use in city parades, events, etc., but it is still a roughly $70,000 rehabilitation project. Chief Dixon says the city is hopeful businesses will step forward and provide corporate sponsorship to help get the fire engine revitalized.
