VIDEO: A massive fire destroyed a home in western Mecklenburg County early Friday. Charlotte firefighters along with several area volunteer fire departments were called around 1 a.m. to the home along Mount Holly Road. Channel 9 crews were the first to arrive at the scene and captured incredible video of the huge flames as the house burned out of control. Officials said it was unclear if anyone was living inside but told Channel 9 nobody was hurt in the blaze. There is no word yet on what may have caused the fire. A lot of the departments that responded to this fire are volunteer departments because the house is outside city limits. Channel 9 learned last month some of those VFDs could close next year. Commissioners are weighing the rising cost of operating the volunteer departments versus public safety.
