In an effort to slow the new coronavirus outbreak, several people’s places of work have been shut down in Randolph County, but many essential employees are continuing to carry out their job duties, including firefighters. For those whose jobs involve services that have been deemed essential to society — like police officers, nurses, grocery and pharmacy workers and, of course, firefighters — workers are still going to work each day, putting their own health at risk. Samantha East, a firefighter with the Asheboro Fire Department, also works part-time at Blue Flint Animal Hospital as a veterinarian technician in another profession that has been deemed essential. While both of East’s jobs continue to operate as normally as possible, she’s witnessed how both have had to change to accommodate the threat of COVID-19.
