Work on the new Fire Services Facility at the Coastal Carolina Airport in New Bern continues as scheduled.
The building was an old rental car return facility. The rental car space was moved to make room for the new fire facility on the south side of the terminal building. The project is mainly funded by available federal money. "Currently, the project is on schedule and on budget, which is very nice. It is about fifty percent complete, so we are expecting to have it wrapped up in the September time frame," Coastal Carolina Airport Director Andy Shorter explained.
This fire and rescue facility brings an upgrade for the airport's needs and can serve the entire community in other potential disasters. Members of the community believe this would be especially helpful to house out-of-state units that come to help with evacuation coordination like Eastern North Carolina experienced after Hurricane Florence.
