VIDEO: Fires have been breaking out across North Carolina in recent weeks, including in one that spread through Fairfield Harbour marshland Wednesday at around 4 p.m.
The flames have been extinguished, but North Carolina Forest Service crews worked for three hours Wednesday night and three more hours Thursday morning, with helicopters scooping up water and dumping it on the smoldering dry marshland.
Austin Harriett with the NC Forest Service said, “We haven’t determined a cause for the fire yet, you know it could have been anything, you know, boating, flares, it’s really undetermined at this point.”
How does a damp marsh surrounded by water go up in flames? Harriett said anything can catch on fire if it’s dry enough.
