The North Carolina Forest Service reports the Huntsville Mountain wildfire is now 70% contained as of Thursday night, Dec. 2.
According to Jeremy Waldrop, N.C. Forest Service public information officer, 350 to 375 acres have burned.
“We’re doing pretty good with this containment and the burnouts so far,” Waldrop said.
Waldrop said 50 firefighters with six different agencies are working to battle the flames. On Thursday, crews used a controlled burn to exhaust fuel sources like leaves and brush. Earlier in the week, 10 structures were in jeopardy of being engulfed, though Waldrop said that threat is over.
“It could be homes, outbuildings, things like that,” Waldrop said. “They’re good; there’s no damage at all.”
Currently, there are no orders to evacuate. That includes inmates at the nearby Marion Correctional Institution, according to Sgt. Danny Craig.
