Firefighters from four departments battled a stubborn sawdust fire Saturday at the West Fraser mill at Armour Saturday.
Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire-Rescue Chief Steve Camlin said his department got the call about 11 a.m. and fought the fire for about three hours.
Fire broke out when a welding team working on a tower ignited sawdust in the elbow of a large pipe.
Camlin said the department initially attacked the fire with water from its ladder truck, then sent a three-man team up the tower. The team unbolted an area to gain access and suppressed the fire with a hand line and foam.
“We train for this all the time, so we know what to do when we get there,” Camlin said. “This happens every two to three years.”
Crews from Northwest, Bolton and Buckhead assisted.
