VIDEO: Around 100 firefighters contained a fire that burned about 60 acres of land and woods Wednesday evening in Monroe, according to officials.
The fire began from a farmer’s combine malfunction around 5 p.m. near Weddington Road and Willoughby Road. Officials say crews will stay to work overnight, and they’re bringing a bulldozer to cut some of the brush and make sure the fire does not cross over the line.
“It was a very tense situation for a little while, we had very heavy fire and the wind blowing, but we were able to contain it,” said Assistant Fire Chief Tony Belk. “At this time it is contained, it’s smoky and there will be smoke in the air for a while but it is contained.”
Three people voluntarily evacuated from two homes nearby. Officials say they will be OK to stay in the homes overnight.
