A FedEx cargo truck fire Tuesday evening caused a ripple effect of backed-up traffic during the evening rush hour on I-540 westbound. Raleigh Battalion Fire Chief Robert Hodge said the fire was reported at 6:10 p.m. at the Falls of Neuse interchange of I-540. Westbound lanes were closed at mile marker 14, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Westbound lanes of the highway were backed-up to the Capital Boulevard exit. Eastbound lanes were also impacted with slowdowns. The cargo truck that was gutted by flames was seen along the shoulder of I-540 following the fire. Hodge said the driver of the truck reported seeing flames near the right rear wheel and pulled over before the truck went up in flames. Hodge was not sure if the truck was loaded with packages. The highway reopened around 8:40 p.m.
