One person is dead, and another is seriously injured after an apartment caught fire in Wilkes County, said officials.
Mathis said the fire happened on Rock Creek Road in Hays around 4:30 a.m. Mathis said that a man died in the fire, and one woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Crews have not identified the man or woman.
He said that six families were living in the apartment at the time of the fire.
According to Mathis, the apartment building was the only structure that was impacted by the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Mathis said crews were expected to remain on the scene until at least 9 a.m.
