A box truck caught on fire after colliding with an overhead sign in a deadly Salisbury wreck Thursday afternoon, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Elemer Lee Carpenter, 84, of Winston-Salem, was identified as the person killed. Troopers said the only vehicle involved was Carpenter’s box truck. The crash happened on Sept. 19 around 12:15 p.m. along Interstate 85 South near Exit 72. Reports stated Carpenter was traveling southbound when he ran off the road into the median, hit a guardrail, crossed over that guardrail and struck an overhead highway sign.
