PHOTO: A passing driver noticed a large plume of smoke on the way to work Friday morning and ended up helping a family escape a house fire near 60th and Elm streets. "It was kind of a miracle that I happened to be driving down the street," Annie Martinez said. Martinez said she never gets off at the 60th Street exit to get to work, but for the first time in about five years she made the detour Friday. On her drive she spotted a tall column of black smoke around 6:45 a.m. and decided to see what was going on. Martinez turned a corner and saw a garage on fire; the flames were spreading to the house. Martinez parked, called 911 and ran up to the house to see if anyone was inside.
