Grand Island's newest flood project already paid for itself when the bomb cyclone hit and now it's saving money for homeowners as the flood maps are redrawn.
The Prairie / Silver / Moores (PSM) Project came about after northwest Grand Island was hit hard by flooding in May 2005.
Streets resembled rivers and North Road was acting like a dam, holding water back in the wrong direction as we witnessed a desperate act.
"They cut the road and flooded the field on the east side and protected houses," planning director Chad Nabity said, recalling the decision to cut the road to release water.
Shop-Vacs ran for days as Grand Island was swamped in 2005. But when neighboring towns were hit in 2019 the city saw only minor problems.
"Grand Island was kind of a jewel last year," said Jesse Mintken of the Central Platte Natural Resources District.
